The release next month of the film Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep brings back into the spotlight the struggle to win for women in Britain the right to vote, not achieved until 1918 and then only for women over 30.

Mary Evans Picture Library have an incredible collection of images of suffragettes at this time: the processions organised, the speeches made, the prison sentences endured, the arrests, the propaganda, the campaigning, the violence. ‘The March of the Women Collection’ documents all of these, and also features a strong set of anti-suffrage postcards characterised by a cheery misogyny, an attitude that confronts the film’s characters on a daily basis.
